Laxmi Prasad Devkota, born on the night of Lakshmi Puja, 13 November 1909, in Dhobidhara, Kathmandu, emerged as a prominent Nepali poet, playwright, novelist, and politician. His early education was guided by his father, Teel Madhav Devkota, a Sanskrit scholar. Completing his Bachelor’s Degree in liberal arts and law, Devkota went on to become a key figure in Nepali literature.

Devkota played a pivotal role in initiating a modern Nepali language romantic movement and was the second writer born in Nepal to venture into composing epic poems. His innovative use of the language elevated Nepali poetry to new heights. Notable works include the widely popular “Muna Madan,” as well as “Sulochana,” “Kunjini,” “Bhikhari,” and “Shakuntala.”

The legacy of Devkota endures, with his contributions to Nepali literature being celebrated. His poem “Muna Madan” remains a perennial best-seller, showcasing the enduring impact of his profound and thought-provoking verses on Nepali literature.
