Satya Mohan Joshi, who lived from 1920 to 2022, was a highly esteemed Nepalese writer and scholar acknowledged for his extensive research into the history and culture of Nepal. Born in Lalitpur District, he assumed the role of the inaugural director of the Archaeological and Cultural Department in 1959 and played a pivotal role in establishing various cultural institutions in Kathmandu.

Joshi held expertise in the Newa Civilization and the folk culture of the Karnali region. As a numismatist, he delved into the study of historical coins from the Licchavi, Malla, and Shah eras. Notably, he made history as the first Nepali to visit New Zealand, documenting his experiences in a travelogue that informed Nepalese readers about the International Time Zone and Maori culture.

The recipient of the prestigious Madan Puraskar three times (in 1956, 1960, and 1970), Joshi was honored for his works “Hamro Lok Sanskriti,” “Nepali Rastriya Mudra,” and “Karnali Lok Sanskriti,” respectively. His remarkable contributions to Nepali literature, art, and culture earned him several awards, including the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu.

Satya Mohan Joshi passed away at the age of 102 in 2022. His life and contributions continue to serve as a source of inspiration for individuals in the realms of literature, culture, and history.
