Yogmaya Summary
“Yogmaya” is a historical novel penned by Neelam Karki Niharika. Released on February 17, 2018, by Sangri-La books, it clinched the Madan Puraskar in 2074 B.S. The narrative delves into the women’s rights movement in Nepal.
The storyline revolves around the life of Yogmaya Neupane (1860-1941), a religious leader and advocate for women’s rights born in Bhojpur. She valiantly opposed the autocratic Rana regime, personally confronting rulers and advocating for “dharma-rajya” (good governance). For her protest against the regime, she was incarcerated and became the first woman in the country known to be jailed for political beliefs.
In her later years, Yogmaya, along with 67 disciples, tragically opted for mass suicide (Jal-Samadhi) by jumping into the Arun River in 1941. Despite the persecution of her group, Yogmaya chose to stay in Nepal, spending her final days in the vicinity of her birthplace in Eastern Nepal.
The novel was later adapted into a play by Tanka Chaulagain in 2019, featuring popular Nepali actress Mithila Sharma in the lead role.
