Critical thinking

a.What kind of divided identity is depicted in the novel Half A Life? How do characters in the novel try to create new identities for themselves? Explain.

Ans: Identity is the main theme of this novel and can be found represented throughout almost every chapter in the novel. Identity is the reason Willie Chandran’s father rejected his own family and married a woman of low caste. Willie wants to create a new identity for himself as well and leaves India. Later in London, Willie tries to make a new identify in the University. He does not tell truth about his family and says that he is from the Christian community in India. He does not want to be recognized by his father’s identify.

Again he tries to create new identify with Ana. He goes to Ana’s house in Portuguese colony in Africa. He thinks that he will be completely accepted in new land and will have new identity. But once again he proves to be wrong in his decision to settle in Africa. His condition becomes even worse than in London because he has to face the similar situation like in London.

Willie’s father marries a lower caste woman to get new identity. Willie, himself tries to create new identify once in India, again in London and once more in Portuguese colony in Africa. In this way different characters try to create new identify for themselves.

b.Discuss the similaries between the author and the protagonist in the novel?

Ans: The author of this novel, V.S Naipaul and the protagonist of this novel Willie are similar in the sense that both of them are living the life of immigrants. VS Naipaul was born in Trinidad and Tobago and living in London. The protagonist of this novel, Willie was born in India and living in London Both of them left their motherland to make an identity.
