Michael Faraday Summary
Michael Faraday (1791-1867) was a renowned English scientist who made substantial contributions to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His notable discoveries include elucidating the principles behind electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and electrolysis.
Faraday initially embarked on his career as a chemist, where he identified several new organic compounds, including benzene. He achieved the remarkable feat of liquefying a “permanent” gas. However, his most significant achievements lay in the realm of electricity and magnetism. Faraday pioneered the generation of an electric current from a magnetic field, invented the first electric motor and dynamo, demonstrated the correlation between electricity and chemical bonding, explored the impact of magnetism on light, and identified and named diamagnetism.
His experimental work, coupled with substantial theoretical contributions, laid the groundwork upon which James Clerk Maxwell developed his electromagnetic field theory. Despite his profound impact on science, Faraday declined a knighthood and spent his later years in a residence provided by Queen Victoria.
